This eight-week class focuses on different topics each week, from types of fat and heart health, to eating mindfully.  You’ll help the chef make a tasty meal rich in nutrients, with reduced sugar and salt for better health, and enjoy the meal together!

A WIC counselor will be available at Metro Caring every Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00pm.

What is WIC?

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides nutritious foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. Those who have children under age five in their household are also eligible for services (i.e. dads, grandparents, foster families, other caregivers)

What is required of participants?

Anyone coming for a WIC appointment needs to provide a proof of ID (Driver’s License, Medicaid card, CO ID card, passport, birth certificate, SSC, work/school/military ID). Appointments can range from 15 mins to an hour+ depending on where they are in their certification cycle and how many family members are applying.

Heart Disease Testing and Education

Every Monday, Denver Health’s Cardiovascular screening program offers a 30 minute finger-prick blood sample screening to test all lipid levels. Trained professionals will offer testing to determine a person’s risk for heart disease.

The Denver Health professionals can offer assistance with health education, health referrals and navigating the medical systems (even without insurance).

Ask the Welcome Desk or your Community Navigator about making an appointment for a Heart Screening or walk-in to Metro Caring’s Welcome Center on Mondays.
