Along with providing healthful food, it is important to help people understand the importance of proper nutrition to improve their well-being. Further, learning to grow food at home can expand fresh-foods intake, increase opportunities for exercise, and supplement the food budget.
Cooking and nutrition classes happen weekly on Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 11 a.m. Participants learn about food safety, healthy and time-saving cooking tips, and ways to improve nutritional choices while on a limited budget. Please call to register as class size is limited. Walk-ins are welcome as space allows.
Gardening classes teach people how to grow their own food for increased self-sufficiency and a healthy lifestyle. They are offered during the growing season—please stay tuned for the new schedule coming in early spring 2016. Classes are led by community gardeners on a variety of topics relevant to small-space gardening and family involvement. Please call to register, but walk-ins are welcome.
Metro Caring offers healthy living and nutrition education. During the classes, participants learn about quick, delicious, and easy ways to improve nutritional choices while on a limited budget. This education is helpful in breaking the cycle of obesity among the food insecure.
Gardening education teaches people how to grow their own food for increased self-sufficiency and a healthy lifestyle. Raised beds are used as teaching gardens to enable participants and community members to learn best practices and techniques to successfully grow food in their own homes and neighborhoods. During the growing season, master gardeners are available to answer questions and lead free classes on a variety of topics, emphasizing the ability to grow food in limited urban spaces - an essential component of the program since many of Metro Caring’s participants come from neighborhoods considered “food deserts.” Food grown and harvested in the gardens is also made available in the Metro Caring Market.
Raised beds are used as teaching gardens, with participants and community members preparing the soil, planting, tending, and harvesting. We believe anyone can learn to grow his or her own food.
Gardening classes empower attendees to take what they’ve learned back to their neighborhood, school, or home.
Composting bins and vermiculture are maintained on-site to dispose of produce that is compromised. Food that cannot be composted is given to a pig rancher.
Community members and faith communities are encouraged to “plant a row” for Metro Caring.
Delivering Microgreens to Local Partners (And What Are Microgreens??)
For more than a year, Metro Caring has been growing microgreens in our state-of-the-art greenhouse, which we deliver to local restaurants, like Humboldt, Rialto, and Blue Island Oyster Bar.
